Aoi Nanatomo: Ambassador for Nihon Buyo

The Kojiki, Japan’s oldest written document, from 712, describes goddesses who carried bamboo leaves and stamped their feet rhythmically as they danced during religious ceremonies. Today a Japanese traditional dance, or nihon buyo, performance is a fantastic collection of separate parts: the background painting, the stage, the kimono, the wig, the makeup, the dancer, the sound of the shamisen and the flute; all these magnificent details add up to a total masterpiece.
In this brilliant originality, the dancer Aoi Nanatomo is the greatest treasure of them all: her intense immobility and relaxed beauty prove her immense talent as a performer. Without a proper narrative, the story still holds together: amazing artist doing amazing things in an amazing space. Her mentor, Juraku Hanayagi, a Living National Treasure of nihon buyo, calls her performance “elegant, graceful and truly sophisticated.”
Off stage she is funny, talkative and too young to be this good at her art. “I began dancing when I was six, on June 6th, which is the typical day to start traditional art forms. The training was fun and relaxed and I was hooked. It was a thorough education based on empathy, which is very similar to the samurai spirit. In nihon buyo we approach the person through the concepts of empathy and tai gi shin: tai means the physical development of the body, gi refers to techniques, and shin to the spirit. It is a lifetime commitment to total self-improvement.”
She prepares for each role with a complete immersion into the culture in which the heroine lived. “I love that aspect so the daily routine and school management all fall on my husband’s shoulders.” With seven schools and 400 students, her husband, Masatoshi Nozaki is busy enough, yet the pair created an NPO, the Japan Association for Performance Art to introduce nihon buyo to both the foreign community and children. “I performed at many embassies and we also invite people to our studio so they can enjoy this wonderful traditional art form.”
